RAIN, RAIN, RAIN!!!

Another “no collar” day…

For those of you new to the “no collar” concept…I only wear a collar when we go somewhere…so when we stay home I think of it as a “no collar” day.  Not much fun though because it’s been rainin’ for three days!

The humans are happy about the rain ‘cause we’ve been in drought.  Last night we had a LOUD thunderstorm and my human Papa woke up and so did I.  Neither of us could believe my human Momma slept through it all.  She never woke up or even stirred in her sleep.

Gotta go now.  I’ll have lots of pics and stuff on Thursday.

Stay tuned.  I’ve never had a chance to tell you about last weeks fun and games!

Y’all come back now!

Sam and the Blog Hop

Hi Y’all,

Do ya believe it! Saturday ag’in! Time to go to the “Hop”. But before I do, I wanna remind you of the special dogs from this past week who desperately need homes! Scroll down and look at them again!

Jus’ ‘cause they’re old or have a health problem they were discarded. Can you imagine this ol’ boy getting his Therapy Dog okay and goin’ to visit all the humans like him in nursing homes? Jus’ think of the empathy he’d have and how he’d enjoy the lovin’ and how much the humans would love being able to pat his old head.

Go ahead, scroll down to this weeks entries and look and Sam and the other Chessies we were able to show…and there are so many more on PetFinder and Chessie Rescue…and these are just Chesapeake Bay Retrievers…Think of all the Breeds out there!

As you “hop” around, check the “less adoptables” on the other websites!

Special Cases – Less Adoptable

So many homeless Chessies, so little time.  Today’s featured Chessies are going to need a special family or person…

Chessies want to be family, house dogs.  I won’t stay outside without my humans.

This girl has a problem…she either needs someone who would be home to let her out frequently or a moderate climate where she could live outside. I’ll say this, if it was me, I wouldn’t want to have to live outside!  To adopt her you must be within 150 miles of Cincinnati or Georgetown, OH.

Her name is  Georgie  .  I hope she finds her special someone in a hurry because her human family is faced with losing their home…then she’d probably end up in doggie jail.

Then we have Paloma in Denver, CO.  She is blind, but would be happy to jog with you.  My humans have had a blind dog and say it doesn’t slow them down.  She is with Retriever Rescue of ColoradoPaloma is a young adult dog.

Remember to check out CBR Rescue for more information about Chessies.  We aren’t Labs.  We’re always testing the boundaries and rules humans set out for us. We try to please, but we want to be a part of the family. You must train us and be consistent so we understand what you want.

Hope y’all are enjoyin’ seein’ these homeless Chessies and learning more about us as a breed.

Now, there is one more dog I want to bark about.  She is a Chessie Setter Mix and is in a financially troubled No Kill Shelter  Her name is Alley.   At least when Alley and her puppies were abandoned they were left at the shelter gate.  Please help her get out of doggie jail!  She’s lying there on a cement floor hoping for someone to save her. If you are in the South, especially the Florence, Orangeburg, Santee area, check Alley out.  There are other dogs at this shelter just as desperate waiting for a furever home. This shelter is facing desperate times and may have to close their doors.

Y’all come back now!

Times Growing Short! Help the Homeless!

The Old and the Young!

This morning I was so tired from such a busy, busy day exploring yesterday, I couldn’t make up my mind which of these two beautiful Chessies to feature…So if you want a younger dog that needs someone to really, really spend time training and working with him…

…there’s Painter  This beautiful Chessie is now in Maine at a Chesapeake Safe Harbor

But if you’ve gotten to the point in life that you just want a warm, furry head resting in your lap and looking up at you with adoring eyes…A listening ear…A well socialized boy who was abandoned by his family just because he was old…  Look at those sad, sad eyes He looks like he’s going to burst into tears…I know I would if I lost my home jes ‘cause I got old…suddenly everything you know is gone!  I feel so sorry for Sam.  He’s in Georgia at Pawsitive Causes Pet Rescue, Inc

Sorry if I made you cry. Y’all come back now!

It’s Almost Hump Day! Lets get Networking!

Yesterday was a wonderful day!  Haven’t had a chance to download the pictures yet, but this week is about Chessies who can only dream of a furever home like mine…so friends, I’ll catch you up later, maybe next week on my fun and games…today I want to feature a sweet senior girl from the West.

Kiya is in Colorado.  I know there are lots of you Chessies in Colorado…but this lady isn’t one of  you lucky ones. Whether you’re a Chessie or a Golden, or a Spaniel or a sweet lap dog, get your Humans to read this and y’all start networking with friends to find her a home!

2074

Name: Kiya, Sweet Senior Lady

Location:  Fort Collins, CO

Age:  8.5

Color:  Light Brown

Sex:  female

Weight:  75

Neutered?  yes

Vaccines:

  • Rabies
  • DHLPP
  • Kennel Cough
  • Heartworm Preventative

A short bio from the Rescue site reads Kiya is a senior lady who was abandoned at the shelter by someone who tried to have her and her son euthanized because he was moving. We don't think it was her original owner, since she obviously is well trained and her vet history shows an owner that cares and wouldn't callously try to kill her. Kiya is very dedicated to her foster dad, and doesn't like to leave his side...she'll be a Velcro dog for her next dad or mom. By the appearance of her coat, she was an outdoor dog, but is adjusting quickly to being inside and enjoying her new comforts. Please consider this senior lady..

Be sure to visit Chessie Rescue to learn more.

Y’all come back now!  I’ll have more for you later!   Hawk

Another Chessie Less Adoptable

Before I take off on a morning of fun and play I want to tell you about Lucy.

The name of this dog caught my eye.  Why?  Before I came to live with my current family, (I was lucky and never went to doggy jail, but lived with a big family which included my dog mommy and daddy and lots of siblings) there was a senior matriarch named Lucy. She worked as a Therapy Dog and even served after 911.  She has since gone over the rainbow. So today, in her honor, I’d like to feature another Lucy.

Lucy Chessie: Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Dog; Fairfax Station, VA  She's good with kids, housebroken, crate trained, knows commands.  She was abandoned by her family in her time of need…she’s diabetic and 8 yrs old.  Can you imagine how awful she must feel?  Here’s her link:  Lucy  Here’s another picture of her:

I’m so lucky!  But before you decide to make her a lucky girl, learn more about Chessies at CBR Rescue .

Anyway, thanks for listening!

See y’all later!

Adopt a Less Adoptable Pet Week

Hi Y’all,

Well, this is the 3rd day that I haven’t worn a collar.  You know what that means!  I didn’t get to go anywhere because my Humans were busy with people stuff…boring…

So, this afternoon when I saw Petfinders.com Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Lula I thought wow…my humans wouldn’t take in a another big Chessie, cause there isn’t room for 2 of us when we travel.  I’d love a fulltime playmate, but…it’s nice to be an “only”.  So I thought…I’ll talk about Lula in my Journal!  So she can have a great place to live like I do!

   For Lula's details Click

This week is Petfinder.com's , Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week, a week dedicated to
spotlighting those pets that are most often overlooked in shelters and rescues. It's all about getting
people to take a second glance -- and give a second chance -- to those pets whose only
crime is being a little older, the "wrong" color, or otherwise "less adoptable" -- but who
have just as much love to give. They sit in shelters for weeks, months, and even years waiting for their forever home.

So BlogPaws Be the Change for Pets and I are taking up the cause for the next “Be the
Change Challenge”! We're spreading the word.

So who are these "less adoptable" pets? They are like Lula, senior or older pets, those with
health problems (even minor ones), victims of breed prejudice (like Pit Bulls), shy pets,
and those that need to be only pets.  But that's not all! A lot of people overlook black and
brindle dogs and cats as well. (Not convinced? Check Why Less Adoptable Pets Rule)
So next time you or a friend are looking to adopt, give these pets a second chance, a little
more time and you never know, a less adoptable pet might just be the purrr-fect pet
adoption for you!

The Saturday Blog Hop!

Hi Y'all,

Saturday evening again. This morning I caught y'all up on the goings on the last couple days and gave you the link to Chessie Rescue. Tonight I'm gonna take you on a Blog Hop! Lookin' forward to seeing y'all there!

Hawk aka Brown Dog

I have to remember how lucky I am!

Hi again y’all,

Sometimes it’s so hard to remember, especially when the humans go someplace without me or it’s raining and nobody does much. I was especially put out yesterday…poor suffering me…it rained the day before and we didn’t do anything, then yesterday the humans left me home and didn’t come back ‘til after my supper time!!

But I get ahead of myself.  Let me take you back to Thursday. My human Mom and I went jogging, but she wore out on me and used excuses to stop, like taking these pictures along our route.

P1010001 Yes, I have a tail! It’s waving!!  P1010002 First color in the trees.  P1010003 P1010004 This is an old farm shed and wild flowers. And then we saw these two giant big eared dogs watching us from the safety  P1010005  Then Friday it was raining. Here we are on our early morning yard walk. P1010011  P1010012 P1010013 Later it was still raining but we went out to play a little anyway.  Here I wait, along with Momma’s cup of coffee for the release command.  P1010009 P1010010 I was gettin’ damp and wanted to go inside. I was so glad when I saw the signal to go in!  I beat Momma there!  P1010017 So, anyway that brings us to this morning.  I’ve had my walk and read about some of these other poor Chessies in something called Rescue…and they have awful painful things wrong with them and their families deserted them in their hour of need.  If you wanta find out more about Chessies as a breed or help Chessie Rescue stop by their Website at CBR Rescue.

And to think I complained because supper was late.

Y’all come back now!

Help a dog!

Hi Y'all,

This is a special post. Help a shelter get more food for pets who've lost their homes.

Yipee!

Hi again y’all!

Thanks for stoppin’ by.

What a great time autumn is!  It’s cooling off so I get to go more when the humans go.

Here is where we were going yesterday.P1010023  P1010027 See the dark on the rocks…that’s water running down.  I hear the humans callin’ them “weepin rocks”.  Always wonder what they are sad about.

And here I am! P1010035 Just sittin alongside the road checkin’ things out.   There is a tree that has already turned color, right there in the middle P1010036of the picture.

Here I am in the apple orchard. P1010046P1010042 Those are apple crates and a sprayer behind me.

P1010053

Then to end a perfect day God got out His paint brush and produced this painting.  P1010012

Brother 2 Bother: Begging is an art.... like ballet

Brother 2 Bother: Begging is an art.... like ballet

Hi! Just had to share this link...did I learn a lot! I'm going now and practice!

Hawk

A Perfect Day!

Hi!

What a perfect day yesterday was and today has started off a great one too.

Yesterday there was not a cloud in the sky.  It was cold for my human Mom, but great for me!

My human Mom likes to jog and most of the time we are on level ground so she and i left the car at the top of the hill about a half mile or so from the farm gate.  Well, i had her doin’ great…(big Chessie grin)…but then we started the long hill to the farm gate…such huffin’ ‘n puffin’!  Yes, of course i was pantin’!  The road climbs all the way to the gate, but she slowed to a walk before we were halfway up.  I tried to help by pullin’ ‘cause any place where it’s public i wear my lead.  When I pulled, she STOPPED!  I was only tryin’ to help!  When i got back beside her we started again.  I think she was usin’ my attempted aid as an excuse to stop and rest…i really do.  What do you think?

After we joined the car and my human Dad down the private farm road and I had a drink of water I tore around the hay field like a wild man!  There is nothing better than plenty of room to run free!

P1010001 Then we started out through the trails and I met a giant black dog.  This dog smelled funny and is bigger than any black Lab you’ve ever seen!  I’ve see a field full of these dogs before, but my humans won’t let me go play with them.  There is a fence and I could get hurt if I went through it.  The humans tell me the big dog is Black Angus.  P1010008 I’m off now for more fun adventures!

Help!!!!

Well, that’s a deep subject, to use an old cliché. That’s what the humans tell me.

And that’s what this post is about, things I hear the humans talk about.

The humans have some friends in the community who they visit regularly. The friends are ill and some of their fur family are ailing themselves. The humans worry about them and what will become of them when their humans finally succumb to their severe illnesses. A couple of these dogs I have introduced in earlier entries in my original journal, http://browndogcbr.livejournal.com/2009/03/27/ which now usually mirrors this one.

This is a rural community, and unlike me, these dogs live outside and take shelter in the cow barn in the winter. You don’t just take farm dogs to another farm because they are very territorial and most farms already have dogs, or else the humans don’t want them. You don’t move them to live in a city because they are older and have never been in a house or housebroken and are used to great acres to wander…so the humans fret. I try to comfort them. So when I got this email in my inbox today I knew posting it was one thing I could do to help…

Actually, you can help a lot of dogs. How often have you had a chance to have a 20 pound bag of dog food donated to a shelter simply for writing a blog post? It’s really that easy. Pedigree has upped the ante big time. And please spread this message: The food drive is not limited to pet blogs. Imagine if we could spread this message beyond our circles and see how far it goes? The numbers could be substantial. Here is the full scoop:

  • Each year, more than 4 million dogs end up in shelters and breed rescue organizations. Pedigree created The PEDIGREE Adoption Drive to help shine a spotlight on the plight of these homeless dogs.
  • This year the PEDIGREE Adoption Drive is raising awareness for homeless dogs by donating a bowl of food to shelter dogs for everyone who becomes a “Fan” or “Likes” The PEDIGREE Adoption Drive on Facebook. So far more than 1 million bowls have been donated.
  • Special for BlogPaws West: For each blog that posts about the PEDIGREE® Adoption Drive through September 19th, PEDIGREE® will donate a bag of their new Healthy Longevity Food for Dogs to shelters nationwide. It’s simple: Write a post, help a dog.

  • Thursday, September 16 through Sunday, September 19, the Pedigree BlogPaws bloggers will host a Blog Hop, to help raise awareness for the “Write a post, help a dog” effort.

It is so easy to make a big difference. Please set aside a few moments to write a post. Include the bullet points above. Copy the pics if you’d like. Add whatever you’d like in addition to help get the message out. Because this is not limited to pet bloggers, there is tremendous potential. Know bloggers in other categories that might be interested? Please share this post with them, write one of your own, and be here Thursday to leave a link to your post. Let’s make this huge. It would just feel great.

Clean, clean, clean

My human Mom has gone crazy again!  She just vacuumed and dusted, but today when the human Dad went out, the vacuum returned and all sorts of cleaning stuff.  She climbed on a step stool to clean the fan blades…again.  She polished wood furniture, sprayed windows and mirrors with stinky stuff, then polished them too.  She even removed my nose prints which I’ll now have to put back!

It has been a waste of a perfectly beautiful day.  A perfect day in fact, with temperatures here in the mountains topping out at 68 degrees Fahrenheit.  After a day of steady rain yesterday, there is no pollen to irritate all our allergies.  All the windows are open, but it isn’t the same as going hiking.

If you are afraid of gunfire, this is not the time of year to be in the mountains.  It is one hunting season after another right on into the winter when they hunt bear and boar.  Sound travels here in the mountains and you can’t tell from where the gun shots are coming.  This afternoon they sound almost like they are in the yard.

Oh well, the best thing about Mom going crazy is that I get brushed and vacuumed and I LOVE getting vacuumed!!!Hawk 001 Hawk 003 I roll over and get my tummy vacuumed first.

Then, just when I thought “she” was ready to go out and play with me, she goes in and puts fresh food in the flower vase…P1010024 But, I finally got my supper, right after the humans ate theirs.  Soon the humans will go for their evening walk…I’m hoping they go somewhere exciting to walk so I get to explore things…and then I’ll have more to share.

Go!! Go!!! GO!!!!

What a day Saturday was!!

P1010014    Here I am on my third walk, run, hike of the day, exploring the wilds!  But I digress….

The day started normally enough, with a walk to check out my home territory, then breakfast.  But it was then things took a sudden turn.  The humans decided to go down to the town to the farmers market.  I got a walk along the creek.  Another stop along the creek walk.Next thing I did was go home and take a nap, only to be roused to go again!  This time we went to the farm so I could supervise the haying. P1010001 Yep!  That’s me, sittin’ at the top of the hill.  Oh, and I got to meet a little “hot dog” dachshund. He wouldn’t play though. He wasn’t even very friendly. I suggested a hike in the woods, but he said I was crazy.  Lookin’ at his stubby legs I figured he would get his belly scratched raw with the briars and fallen branches. So I took my humans off the check for stray cattle, bears, deer and turkey.  Below are some pictures as I keep encouraging them to keep up. I guess havin’ only two legs instead of four is a challenge.

P1010003 P1010005 P1010006 P1010007  By now the sun was gettin’ high  P1010002  And the humans were hungry.  So when we reached the end of the fence line, we headed back.  P1010008 Yep, that’s me waiting for ‘em at the end of the fence line. By now it was time to head home for dinner, lunch to you city people.  After eating a nap is required.

After a nap we went back to check on the baling and then decided it was such a perfect day with not a cloud in the sky and a high temperature of 66 degrees Fahrenheit, that it should not be wasted.  This was especially good news for me considering my fur coat.  Even 60’s is warm when you like to run and play and can’t take your coat off!  The humans checked to be sure I had plenty of water, and off we went for more exploring.

We saw wonderful things, like this cat, but it was safe behind glass!

P1010018 Then there were the wonderful creeks.P1010012 P1010013 And this lovely old “home place”  still in use today, including its old wood stove.  P1010020

Here are some butterflies filling up on water in puddles along a roadside. P1010021

And finally, like all good things, they have to come to an end.  The sun sinking and the day chilling for the humans, i regretfully follow them toward the vehicle and home.   P1010016

However, all was not lost.  The humans left me to recuperate Sunday morning and they went to someplace they call church.

It was so cold in the early morning that my sissy human mom put on her winter coat when we went outside.  She should have to wear that thing all the time the way I do!  It was only 43 degrees Fahrenheit!  It warmed right up to a high of 66.

In the afternoon after the humans had dinner, we went back to the farm and I got to check out the trails some more.

Monday my human Mom and I went to check out more of the downhill trail,P1010012 here I’m climbing up a side trail.    P1010003 Checkin’ out a noise.  Saw lots of deer tracks, but no bear tracks.  The humans are hopin’ they can meet up, that this trail will meet the ridge trail.

OPPS!!!  Can’t get through, one way is blocked with a huge downed tree overgrown with blackberry brambles and this way P1010005 Drops straight off to, I can’t even see where!  If I won’t go this way I know my human Mom isn’t going!

So it was back the way we came and home to supper.

Today is Tuesday and the humans have lots of chores to do, so I’ll just lay around and dream.  See you when I have another adventure to share.
