Training Can be Fun!

Hi Y’all!

P1460822

It’s time to join Slim Doggy, Emma from MyGBGV Life and To Dog With Love in Fit Dog Friday blog hop!

And don’t forget to link up to the Pet Parade Blog Hop hosted by Rascal and Rocco and co-hosted by Jan's Funny Farm, Basil the Bionic Cat, Barking from the Bayou, and Love is being Owned by a Husky!

Training doesn’t have to be a specific time and place…As a matter of fact, once you teach your pup the basics, it’s better to keep varying the routine.

P1460898

Above I’m practicing recall on the shore.

You want your pup to respond to commands when in public, in the house, or outdoors.  His and your safety could depend on it!

P1460669

The water level is low, so I decided to investigate a path.

P1460672

The wetland muck is like quicksand and just sucks you down. My Human called “far enough, back this way!”.

P1460673

P1460674

This command comes in handy in any number of situations where my Human wants me to return toward her.

P1300828

The best thing my Human and I did together was to go to school together.  As a rambunctious 14 month old, I was eager to please.

However, the training is so important for the Human, even if they’ve trained lots of dogs.

P1300861

I was a quick study, ‘cause I’d had training with my breeder.  But my Human just couldn’t seem to get the recall thing right!  and yes, it really was her fault!

P1300847

We’d do a sit or down.  The Human would walk to a specified point and turn and call me.  But before she’d call I was already on the way.

P1300856

The trainer was an experienced AKC trainer, breeder and handler.  She asked the class if they saw the problem.  No one did.

P1300860

My Human was leaning slightly forward just prior to saying “come”.  She really didn’t know she was doing it.

We really had to practice recalls until she learned how to do it right!

P1300862

So, you see, what your body and arms do IS important!  But you need the help of a trained set of eyes to know what the problem really is.

 P1460979

When you decide to go to school together, you need to practice, practice, practice.  This is when you and your human form that bond together.

P1300857

Y’all come on back!

  3. Great point! Bailie's obedience classes focused a lot on human posture and what a difference it makes. You are one well trained dog! Thanks for joining the hop.

Oh and BTW, I apologize for your issues with linking up to flashback Fridays, and to answer your question, FF is a hop to share and stories, or photos from yesteryear or yesterday, it's all about flashing back :)

    1. Hi Y'all!

Thanks for explaining...I guess today's post...though unintentionally...qualifies. Glad I found it! Lots of Friday's posts are lookin' back!

Found Pet Parade link...guess I was just too early.

  6. We didn't know that something so small as leaning forward a little bit could make such a difference with a command! Glad your human got it straightened out. Looks like you're having lots of fun learning all of your commands!! Mom trained Delilah (one of us kitties) to sit, stay, and jump when she was a kitten. She can still do those things on command too! Pretty good or a kitty! :)

  7. Excellent post, buddy and so TRUE! My Ma leans a bit forward sometimes too so now that my recall has become much better, I come running back to her before she even can say "Come!". It is hard for the humans to notice their body language sometimes...that's why we need to keep up their training.

  8. I agree with you. We "listen" with our eyes too and the body language is very impawtant. We went to a school too, butt it probably was a school for cats. Because they had a CATWALK there where all bipeds walked along and talked about their new shoes and bags... so my mom said uuuuuuh and my dad said WT(you know) and we decided to work with the breeder and with the peeps&pets we met on shows.

  9. You are so right! The humans need LOTS of training! Even for experienced handlers, sometimes you just don't realize what your body is saying. Having another person watch is so helpful!

  10. Humans always need to be kept on a short leash ;)

  11. Great post!! I'm glad you and your mom got it all figured out! :D

  12. Good advice! My Papa's getting better with his body language, but he still confuses me from time to time *shaking head.* I find it easier to understand what he's trying to do when we're in the house... plus outside can be distracting with all the noises and smells! What am I supposed to do???

  13. Interesting post, Hawk! Yes, people body language is as interesting to our dogs as dog body language is to us.

  14. You are such a good boy! I'm glad that you listen to your mom for recall. That is why Bentley is never off his leash. He goes deaf when he hits a scent. ☺ Is your deck decorated with Christmas lights?

  15. Yes, practice makes perfect :-) Our boy Buzz's recall is really good; still working on his sister Missy's recall...she gets distracted easily. We have now been tying her leash to his backpack when practicing heeling & the recall, and it's been working quite nicely ~ she's learning from him!

  16. So true, a set of eyes to see what the handling is doing is very important. That is one of the reasons we go off to the pro on Saturdays for our field training. He sees things that the handler is doing to mess up the dog.

  17. Luke is the first dog I've done formal training with, and it has amazed me how it has increased our bond. It's also amazing to learn all of the things I was doing wrong!! You can read things in a book but I agree having a professional right there with you is the best way to do it.
