Wordless Wednesday

Hi Y’all!

The other day the boys over at BZ Training suggested that if I stood real still…

More Thanksgiving!

Hi Y’all,

No it isn’t still Thanksgiving.  However, my loveable friend Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet star was confused about our Thanksgiving and the October Thanksgiving, so I thought I would explain the wonders of the season for her.

My Humans spent a couple of years, long before my time, in Canada.  The people there, according to my Human, have the best time of year for Thanksgiving.  It looks more like this picture.

That is what it looks like here when the people in Canada celebrate their Thanksgiving the second Monday in October.

For some reason the people in the states failed to take a page from Canada’s celebration.  We celebrate after the trees are naked.

Canada’s Thanksgiving coincides with the Columbus day holiday in the U.S.  Their Thanksgiving has something to do with a voyage from England in search of the Northwest Passage.

Different parts of Canada used to celebrate Thanksgiving at different times.  It wasn’t until 1957 the date became the 2nd Monday in October.

Since Canada and the U.S. are separate countries, we are thankful on different days…something about Pilgrims and Indians and corn here in the states.

Todays U.S. Thanksgiving holiday started from a 1621 celebration.  The Plymouth settlers had a harvest feast to celebrate their successful harvest. In 1863 during the Civil War the U.S. President Lincoln declared the official holiday fourth Thursday in November.

So, you see Penny, Canada and the U.s have the same purpose for celebrating, but back in the day the settlers in the U.S. didn’t know about the explorers in Canada.  Thus their holidays evolved on different dates in different months.

Hunting Season

Hi Y’all!

I guess pretty much everywhere it’s hunting season!  When we left the shore mornings rang with a crescendo of gun fire.  Duck season had opened.  Here it is deer season and the deer are rutting.  It ends in this area December 12th.  Black bear season opens

here December 14th and ends January 1st.  Wild boar are considered feral hogs and not regulated, but you must use the weapon legal  for the season.  Bobcat are open until February 28th with no limit.  Plus you have various feathered creatures that still have seasons open.

Yep, Definitely Naked!

Hi Y’all,

Yep, those trees are all naked.

Not only naked trees, but rain with which to contend!  But I didn’t let that deter me…

A deer leaped across the trail in front of us.  After a sit, once the deer had disappeared…of course the Human was too slow with the camera to get a picture…the Humans let me track the deer part way down.

Then the Humans called me back.

Y’all come back now!

They’re Naked!

Hi Y’all!

We came back to the mountains so the Humans could go visit family.  The first place we went was for a long walk…only it was raining!  Well, not when we first started, but it started before we got far!   The rain sounds so funny when it sweeps across the mountains…like a roaring creek…yes it does!

Even more than the rain which poured down for three straight days, I noticed the trees.  They were all naked!

The leaves should have been a thick crunchy carpet but the rain had soaked them to the point the crunch was muted.

Thanksgiving day dawned beautiful, if chilly.  It warmed nicely and we got a couple of nice walks before and after dinner.

Y’all come back now!

Is This Apollo’s Day to be Thankful?

I’m Apollo.  I’m pleased to meet you.

You humans are celebrating Thanksgiving.  I’d like to be thankful for a forever home…but today finds me sharing with three other pawed ones and their humans. I’m thankful to be able to share this home on this special day.  I’m also thankful to be able to share a few things about myself with all of you.

When I came here I had trouble moving and was boney if you felt me.  Like many older humans I have cataracts.  I see a few shadows and once you show me around and show me the steps, if there aren’t too many, I can manage to get around okay.  I can walk nice on a leash too.  Only please don’t jerk on it since I have arthritis and that hurts.  Don’t most of you older humans have arthritis?

When I first came here they wouldn’t let the other two dogs around me.  To be honest I just wanted to lay around, eat and drink.  After I got my strength and started realizing that this wasn’t doggy jail, the humans let me join the rest of the pawed ones.

Nothing upsets me.  I’m not aggressive about anything or toward anyone.

For more about me from my foster mom and to see more pictures go to my page: Apollo’s page at Blind Dog Rescue

My Thanksgiving Card

Hi Y’all!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m a day early because tomorrow is dedicated to a homeless dog.  I’m hopin’ the dog we select will have something to be thankful for…like a forever home.

I’ll be sharing my Thanksgiving adventures.

Terrific Tuesday!

Hi Y’all,

It’s Thanksgiving week according to the Humans.  The hunters are out in force.  It sounds like a war in the mornings.  I feel sorry for the ducks.

According to the humans, we’ll be spending the holiday with family.  You’ll have to check back to see what we do.

Monday Mischief? What Me?

Hi Y’all!
What’s this Monday Mischief?  I never get into mischief!

I’m actually pretty good at entertaining myself if the Humans won’t co-operate.

Don’t tell the Humans I was rolling on the ground.  I’m allergic to grass and I might have all over itches…but it sure was fun!

Back to tossin’ my toy around!

Y’all come back now!

Sunday Is Still the Weekend!

Hi Y’all!

Even if we did have a record early frost, it is in the 60’s Fahrenheit before noon.  Racing around and working on retrieves leaves a fellow…well…in need of relaxation.

Y’all come back now!

Once Upon a Frosty Morn

Hi Y’all,

When I showed the harvest moon Wednesday, Five Sibes Mom commented that they know it as a “beaver” or “frosty” moon.  We did have a frost.  I looks almost like snow.

I was so excited I got down and rolled in the icy grass.

Yes! That was fun! I kind of melted the frost too.

You can’t see the water for the mist rising.

As soon as the sun hits the mist will burn off and the frost will be gone from the grass.

Of course this unusually early frost doesn’t deter me from my rounds.  It also doesn’t deter the heron from his hunt for breakfast.

Y’all come back now!

TGIF

Hi Y’all,

It’s Friday.  I understand you humans say TGIF…whatever that means.  My Human says it means you are happy because the next couple days are the weekend and family time for most humans.

I’m going to share some scenes of last weekend with y’all.

Dawns early light greats me on my morning tour.

The Purple Martins aren’t in residence this time of year.

But the Great Blue Heron starts early.

Later in the day, the Heron is still hard at work.  Guess birds don’t believe in family time.

I checked out the garden, which is fading.

Then I checked Papa’s favorite tree, the red maple.

Then it was time to check out the beach!

Patrolling is demanding and important work.

Stopped to watch some neighbors checking their own waterfront.

Then it was time for some Frisbee catching!

Such fun!

The day went far too quickly.

I like to take the last long walk of the evening on the beach.

Y’all come back now!
