What’s This Preoccupation?

Hi Y’all!

I’m just layin’ here thinkin’ about this next big holiday that the Humans keep talkin’ about.  The holiday is New Year.

What I want someone to explain is why all this preoccupation with a day?  What’s so special?

Everybody is making reservations for the night before, and planning parties and things for New Year’s Day.

Don’t y’all think you should just follow my example and concentrate on the here and now?

Y’all come back now!

Make This a Happy New Year

For these Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

You can contact any one of them at:

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief & Rescue, Atlanta, GA • 770-684-7831 • p-scook@mindspring.com

For more information on any of the dogs below, click on their name or their picture to go to their Petfinder page.

First is Bailey, a six and a half year old neutered male with no health problems.  He likes to smile.  He loves other dogs, cats, car rides, swimming, and retrieving.  Bailey has a food issue.  If he is fed separately from other pets it isn’t a problem.

Brownie needs a loving home.  He is a Chessie mix that comes from a bad situation of abuse.  He has been treated for heartworms.  He needs an experienced Chessie home where he is the only dog.

Elyse is young Chessie.  Her color is called deadgrass.  She is beautiful, fun loving and full of mischief.  She needs a home dedicated to exercise and obedience training.

This is Helli.  Another deadgrass, she was featured last week.  She knows basic commands and loves retrieving, swimming and car rides.  She is gun shy, however.

Next is Cameo.  She is already 70 lbs.  Currently she is responding well to treatment for demodedic mange.  She loves car rides, water, children, other dogs, cats and strangers.  She is partially housebroken.  She is young and needs lots of exercise and obedience training.

Finally, we have Sissy, another young Chessie.  She weighs about 50 lbs.   She is housebroken.  Sissy is still learning how to be a dog.  She also is just learning about a leash.  She will only be adopted into a home with other dogs and a fenced yard.

It’s Come and Gone!

Hi Y’all!

Do y’all feel a let down right after all the Christmas rush and celebration is over and all the family and friends go back to their everyday lives?

Nothin’ cookin’ here…but I bet Kol’s mom has something good at his house!

The Day After

Hi Y’all!

This is Boxing Day in Canada!  I thought that meant that people went boxing…but evidently it really means a “day of goodwill”.  Boxing Day is a holiday that happens on the first or second weekday after Christmas.

Besides Canada, it is also celebrated in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.  In Ireland it is known as St Stephens Day, a religious holiday. In 1994 South Africa renamed Boxing Day as the Day of Goodwill.

Evidently it has become another of those mad shopping days that humans enjoy.

Christmas Eve

Hi Y’all!

I’m going to go to Christmas’ past…

My first Christmas in the mountains with my Humans was 2007.

My next Christmas was 2008.  That was the year I started this blog to save my memories.

We had snow up here that year.

The following year, 2009, we also spent Christmas in the mountains.

That brings us to last year.  We went home to the shore for Christmas.  We had a great time

since the weather was perfect!

The flowers are still blooming this time of year and it isn’t too hot to go for nice runs…

Beautiful flowers…most will be gone with a hard January frost.  By February things are blooming again as spring arrives at the shore.

Here in the mountains February means more snow. Sad smile

The highlight of Christmas at the shore was a great morning run!

This Christmas we are once more staying in the mountains…

Have a merry one y’all!

Happy Happy!

Hi Y’all!

I’ve been layin’ here thinkin’ about what my Human said.

She said that different religions celebrate holidays this time of year…like Hanukkah also known as the Festival of Lights.  The Jewish people get to celebrate this holiday for eight whole days!  This festival is to celebrate the Jewish peoples’ struggle for religious freedom.  This holiday started on December 21st this year.

There are many different religions.  My Human had a dear friend who was Buddhist and celebrated Bodhi Day.  Muslim and Hindu holidays sometimes fall this time of year.

I really don’t understand all this religion stuff, but I like the presents!

Have a Happy…!

Helli

Meet Helli

Helli is a deadgrass Chessie who will not make a hunting companion.  Helli is gun shy.

However, she loves swimming, car rides, retrieving.  Helli is happy with other dogs, cats, strangers and children.  She also knows commands like sit, come and heel.

Helli would love to be a great family pet.

Tuesday’s Tasty Treats

Hi Y’all,

My Human hasn’t had much time for cookin’ lately.  However, she did manage to make me some of those tasty sweet potato honey treats that she learned how to make from Kirby’s Kitchen.

Right now I’m off to Kol’s to see what his mom is makin’.

Me? Mischief?

Hi Y’all!

Here it is, Mischief Monday!

I have some real mischief to tell you about this week… only it is not the kind of mischief that y’all suggested to me.

Over at Peggy’s Pet Place I gather that Kelly likes dumping trash cans and chewing on shoes.  My Human usually makes sure that no  trash is in the cans and shoes are in the closets when I’m left alone.

Over at You Did What with Your Weiner it was suggested that I just go out and get myself a kid! Why? Because kids aren’t bothered with tall humans’ stuff.  My human niece stopped to visit me and told me that the problem there is that the tall humans usually take the kids with them when they leave.   Sad smile

A cat to play with would be nice, but my Human Papa is allergic to cats.   Oh well…

Instead I decided to investigate the guest bathroom.  My Human has always left the door open and the commode lid up.  She says that way should anything happen to both Humans and someone didn’t rescue me before my water bowl went dry…

First, understand I NEVER drink out of the commode.  I only use my own bowl or a water bottle.  However, I thought that the guest bathroom would be interesting to sniff around.  I even checked behind the door.

OOPS!

I could hear my Human when she came in the front door and I started barking.  LOUD!

She called “Hawk!  Hawk where are you?”  I kept barking.

Finally!  I almost knocked my Human over when I burst out as she opened the bathroom door.

Oh, I hope that never happens again!

Y’all come back now.

Another Award! Oh What Fun!

Hi Y’all!

I can’t tell you how excited I am!  Wait ‘til the Humans see that while they ignored me, I got another Award!  Whoopee!

This Award came from C and H along with Carla, a beautiful Great Dane, who is my age and Jonquil…no not the flower, the guide dog puppy in training.  Their blog is called Growing a Guide Dog.

We really, really appreciate your thinking of us and forwarding this “dearest” (ie. liebster) award to us.  Thank you again.

This Award is given to help promote growing and young blogs.

In order to accept the award we must do the following:
1. Copy and paste the award on our blog.
2. Link back to the blogger who gave us the award.
3. Pick our five favorite blogs, with less than 200 followers and leave a comment on their blog to let them know they have received the award.
4. Hope that the five blogs chosen will keep spreading the love and pass it on to five more blogs.

Limiting my choice to five favorites with less than 200 followers was a challenge.  With great difficulty I narrowed my selection to the following five:

Boondocks and the Love Shack Pack is an entertaining blog with an expanding number of Golden rescues and along with 4 growing kids in addition to parents.  The dogs and people do therapy work at various facilities.  Y’all have to stop and meet them.

Life with Desmond is about a beautiful mixed breed dog that was rescued from a kill shelter when he was only one year old.  His human is learning to train dogs…she says right now Desmond is in charge. Winking smile

Y’all know how impressed I am with service dogs, especially guide dogs who safely lead blind people through the everyday chores of their lives.  Their training begins almost before birth and definitely immediately after birth.  Then at weaning time they go to a “puppy raiser” or just “raiser”.  This wonderful raiser gets to potty train and expose the pup to all the things they could encounter once they graduate from advanced training and are responsible for a person’s life.  What an awesome responsibility, don’t you agree.  About 18 months later, they turn the obedient, house broken pup in for training (IFT) and usually start all over again with an 8 week old pup and the poop bags. Winking smile

C and H from Growing a Guide dog, which gave us this award, are just such dedicated raisers.  Thus it is only fitting that this award also go to other raisers.

Puppy Raising with Monte and Me is just such a blog.  You learn lots of things about how to expose a youngster to everyday distractions and lots more.  The Guide Dog programs have training classes and standards that the raisers follow.

Patrick the IV the Stories of a CCI puppy is also known as Raising Patrick in College and puppy in a pickle.  Y’all really must visit this blog!  This determined pup and its raiser are both going to school!  The raiser is both a student and a teacher.

Finally we have a CCI puppy raiser who is a senior in high school.  Right now it is a bittersweet time as the pup Heidi goes off to a new home.  However, in January she will be receiving a new puppy to train.  The blog is titled One Puppy…One Vest…Loads of Adventures.  This is their second Leibster Award.  They also got one on December 10…They are really great reading and these pups have some great adventures!

Hectic Means Boring

Hi Y’all,

It’s been a hectic week for the Humans and a boring one for me.

It’s poured rain all day today.

I don’t mind being stuck here in the mountains until it gets really cold.  As long as the weather is mild and temps hang in the 50’s or above my Humans like to do stuff outside.  Below 50 my Human hibernates!  Really she does!

Lookin’ forward to something excitin’ happenin’ as soon as my Humans calm down a wee bit.  Y’all come back now!

Fun Friday! An Award!

Hi Y’all!

Guess what!  I got an Award!  Oh, thank you, thank you very much Bassett Momma!

Liebster is the German word for “dearest”.

My five favorite blogs with less than 200 followers were, as expected, difficult to choose.  I follow them because I like them, and I like far more than five who have less than 200 followers.  With great difficulty I narrowed my selection to the following five:

First there is darling Goose! Goose is a very special rescue whose forever mistress was influenced by the very Hand of God…you know how He keeps an eye on even the smallest sparrow…He definitely had his eye looking out for Goose.

Second, is Rottrover, my, what else, Rottweiler friends Bart and Ruby.  Currently they are running a campaign to get Pip his own couch!

Third, is Davey and his adventures as he matures and learns to be a guide dog.

Fourth, is the adventures of 2 Labs and their humans.  These are the tales of a retired guide dog and a career changed Lab living with a raiser.  They really enjoy a happening life.

Finally, I pass the award to Bailey and Deva who are a pair of Whippets who share their fast and slow adventures with you.  There is nothing more beautiful than a pair of Whippets, which look like miniature greyhounds, in full flight or totally relaxed at rest.

Donner

Hello.  My name is Donner.  Aren’t I one handsome dude?

I’m only a wee bit over a year old and they think I’m a mix of Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Irish Setter.  As you can see I’m very red and it isn’t sunburn.  You humans get sunburn.

Look, I’ve had the worst experience.  Last month I went to the park with my human and while reading all the pee mail they disappeared.  There were too many scents to pick theirs up and we’d come in the car…so…Then the Animal Police came and arrested me…vagrancy or something like that…

Now I’m in Doggy Jail!  Can you believe it?  I didn’t do anything!  The humans abandoned me and I’m the one in jail!

Please, please get me out!

For information about me, please call the shelter staff direct at 606-886-3189.

Click here or on my name or picture to visit my Petfinder page.  Thanks!

I Lost the Tasty in Tuesday!

Hi Y’all!

Today is supposed to be “Tasty Tuesday”.  Did y’all know that?  Evidently my Humans have forgotten!

Do y’all see anything in my mouth?

They’ve had business in the city so have been gone from dark to dark.  You say I’m lucky to get walked and fed?  Y’all are right!

Nothing happening here…but check out Kol’s place.  His mom usually has all kinds of good stuff happenin’!

No Mischief Here!

Hi Y’all!

I was so looking forward to a trip someplace!  I wanted to sniff all the pee mail y’all have been leavin’ me.

I wanted to run and race on grounds I haven’t seen since last spring.

Instead:

Saturday…What a Week

Hi Y’all,

Pretty much a lazy week. It rained so hard the first part of the week that all the streams and creeks were swollen almost out of their banks.  Then the other evening, about dark, the winds came up and blew the rocking chairs off the front porch.  The rain changed to snow.  We woke up to a couple of inches of snow on top of ice.

Before noon the snow was almost all gone.

Seems everybody had an opinion about my snow. KB and K our in the Rockies wanted to know if I could melt their snow too. Sigh, they’ll have to talk to the Weather Man. I think he’s the one who melts ours. At least, my Human is always checking with him.

Yesterday I mentioned our hunting season and Haopee asked if I’d ever gotten any pictures of bear or deer.  We see the deer and once in awhile a bear, even a mother bear with her youngsters.   Usually my Human either doesn’t have the camera with her, or she’s just too slow.  Especially deer, you only get a second.  Awhile back my Human did catch this picture.  A split second later, it was gone.

Y’all come back now!
